On Saturday April 15th, the Science Olympiad Team competed in twenty-five academic events at the Washington State, Science Olympiad Tournament, at Highline College, in Des Moines, Washington.

At Regionals in March, two Skyridge teams, and Liberty took the top 3 spots and  qualified to compete at State. This is the second year in a row that 2 Skyridge teams have qualified for State, and is quite an accomplishment.

The Skyhawks then faced the other top twenty middle school teams from around the state (twenty-two teams competed).

Events are science and engineering focused; some students competed in building bottle rockets, hover crafts, and ultra light airplanes, while others were tested on their knowledge in a variety of scientific fields.

After finishing 4th and 14th last year, the Skyhawks trophied this year, placing 3rd and 13th, a Camas best for the middle school division!

Interestingly, the team’s win was achieved by a broad, above average performance by everyone involved, and in the end, the Blue Team’s final point totals beat out many teams that had won first place medals in individual events. A great lesson, and truly a great team effort.

Shout Out to the Camas High team who won First Place, and will be competing at Nationals next!STATE GROUP2017

The Skyridge kids did us proud once again this year at the Greater St. Helens League Middle School District Tournament held on 3/23/17 at Shahala Middle School. Our Varsity #1 team, made up of 8th graders Alex, George, Lucas M., and Tommy, won it all in the final round that pitted them against the best of the best from Cascade and Shahala. Skyridge Varsity #1 advanced to the championship round after amassing the highest total points in the meet through one written and two oral rounds. Impressive. One of those students on Varsity #1, Alex, was also a member of last year’s League champion team. Well done, Alex. By the way, this is also the first time Skyridge has repeated as champions, marking the 4th League championship for our team in the last 17 years.

In the JV “international” tournament, Lucas W. and Devin teamed up with students from Wy’east, Shahala, and Covington to take home top honors as part of JV#4, edging out four other Skyridge players who also advanced to the championship round on their respective JV teams. Congrats to those students, Selina, Anabel, Aayush, and Jackson, who displayed awesome grit and fortitude to make it to the final round of competition.

All in all, it was awesome night for Skyridge!  I’m proud of all the hard work that each player did this year to learn how to work effectively with their teams and have some fun. Bravo!
