Welcome to Skyridge Middle School, home of the Skyhawks! As a staff who genuinely loves the middle school level, we recognize that our students experience great changes intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically during these exciting years between elementary and high school. We are focused on helping all students, regardless of background or ability, to reach their potential while being positive and productive members of our community.
Whether in the classroom, on the court, or on the stage, our students continuously impress us with their commitment to making our school a welcoming and productive place for all students to learn and grow. This synergy of having great kids, a supportive community, and a staff who understands and appreciates the importance of our students’ developmental stage has garnered us some recognition worth mentioning:
- Skyridge was awarded the Washington Achievement Award in 2009, 2010 and 2011. This highly selective award is based on our school’s performance according to the Washington Achievement Index, a comprehensive measurement of how schools in Washington are performing over time.
- In 2009, Skyridge received a “Great Schools Award” presented by the Center for Educational Effectiveness for being in the top 5 percent of schools across the state when looking at the improvement of students at all levels over a five year period.
We strongly believe that one key factor leading to our achievements has been harnessing the power of teaching teams. At Skyridge, teams of 3-5 teachers share students and use their common planning and collaboration time to focus on learning, building a sense of community, and ultimately doing what is best for kids. We also encourage and foster a positive school environment through our Positive Behavior Support program. For example, we teach and reinforce our common expectations through the “Sky Code: Be Safe – Be Respectful – Be Responsible.” Skyridge also offers a wide variety of elective classes and extracurricular programs, including athletics, Knowledge Bowl, musical theatre, Science Olympiad, band, choir, technology, art, jazz band and drama.
As parents and guardians, we welcome your involvement in our school and encourage you to join our Parent Teacher Organization. Parent involvement is a key factor when looking at student success and high performing schools. As you may already know, middle school students can sometimes discourage parental presence at school, but don’t let it stop you! We want and need you here! As the school’s principals, we will do all that we can to support our students and to maintain a safe, challenging, and nurturing school that is full of life, energy, and productivity. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if there is anything we can do for you. GO SKYHAWKS!!
Sincerely,
Aaron J. Smith, Principal
