February Dates to Remember!

penguinwinterHappy February!

We are in the midst of wonderful teaching and learning here this month! We are also in the midst of coughing and sneezing during the cold and flu season. Please keep your child home if they are running a temperature. Our practice is to call you if your child develops a fever here at school, we encourage hand washing, and our custodians routinely wipe door handles, drinking fountains and stairway bannisters.

THANK YOU to our fabulous PTA and families that have supported our schoolwide focus on mathematics! We are planning on how best to spend these resources for students in the area of math instructional strategies.

We are anticipating possible upcoming blustery weather. If we are closed due to inclement weather, February 14th will be a student attendance day! Here are upcoming dates relating to our school:

  • It’s JUNGLE WEEK here in the gym this week!! FUN!
  • Tuesday, February 11: 2nd Grade Field Trip to Aladdin Theatre
  • Thursday, February 13: Read to Feed ENDS! Bring all cards and donated food to school.
  • Friday, February 14: NO SCHOOL
  • Monday, February 17: NO SCHOOL
  • Friday, February 21: Silly Sock Day! and Birthday Table during all lunches
  • Wednesday, February 26: Read to Feed Assembly 9:15
  • Friday, February 28 6:00-9:00: PTA Event! Winter Wonderland Dance and Auction in the Gym

We have lots of voracious readers that are earning bracelets and bringing food in for Treasure House. We know that:

READERS ARE LEADERS!! Great job, Prune Hill Penguins!

CEF Auction Chair needed

That’s right – the CEF Auction never sleeps. Believe it or not, preparations for the 2014 Auction are well underway. In fact, the date and venue have already been secured, but one piece is missing: a co-chair for the committee. Or maybe we should say a dynamic co-chairing duo. Three-year alum Mandy Huth has committed to co-chairing this year’s auction in a supporting role, but she needs a person who will take over the reins.  If you have been looking for a good way to get seriously involved in fundraising in Camas, this may be the job for you! See this job description for more detail about what’s involved, and contact Mandy at cefcamas@gmail.com  if you are at all curious.

Seasons Changing and Penguins Running!

Greetings Penguin Families!

As the weather shifts us into Fall, here are some informational and fun upcoming events in our school community. We hope to see you soon!

*Please continue to drop your student off downstairs between 8:45-9:05. This year we are using the lower portables for Rainy Day recess, as well as opening the library up. Students may play outside, undercover as well.

*For safety reasons, please do not enter any hallway or classroom without first signing in at the office and wearing a visitor’s badge. Teachers appreciate a scheduled visit rather than a drop-in, as their focus is on supervising all students from 9:00-3:40.

Friday, October 4th: Bus Emergency Evacuation Drills! Our upper lot will be CLOSED during the 8:45-9:00 period. Please drop your penguin off downstairs to the playground. Thank you!

Saturday, October 5th 3:00-4:30 at Prune Hill lower track: Come join u s on Saturday and collect points for Ocean to Ocean. Fast walk, jog, run or mix it up! Family members will receive a special Ocean to Ocean card for that day. If you are available to help, please follow the link:

Friday, October 11th: NO SCHOOL! This is a state Teacher In-service day.

Friday, October 15th: RUN FOR THE ARTS!! This takes place at school. Send your pledge forms back to school for our all-school run!

Friday, November 15 (NOTE CHANGE IN DATE) 6:00-9:00: Prune Hill Harvest Dance! Come meet new families, grab a bite to eat, win a raffle prize, and kick-up your heels with our kid-friendly DJ!

Saturday, October 19th 5:00 @ Vancouver Hilton: Camas Education Foundation (CEF) dinner and auction

Tuesday, October 29th Picture Retakes

Joining the Prune Hill PTA helps support our school! Attached is a membership form that you may print and send into school with your student. You will receive a school directory for your participation, and the classroom that has the highest percentage will win a pizza party!

Sincerely,

Prune Hill Staff and PTA

Sunny September!

We are off and running here at Prune Hill Elementary, with 480 students this year! Everyone is getting to know each other and learning new routines. Consider that it may take most of September for your penguin to make the adjustment to school: eating on a schedule, playing on a schedule…following adult directions and attending all day long is tiring and hard work! Encourage your student that they will will indeed get the hang of this if they are feeling worn out, and that we are here to help them make the transition.

Attached is the September Newsletter, which includes a calendar of upcoming dates. A hard copy will be sent home this first month. If you prefer a hard-copy rather than electronic, please fill out and return the half-sheet with your student to school.

Thank you for supporting our work here at our fantastic school!

Prune Hill Drop-In Thursday, August 29th 4:00-6:00

Drop on in Thursday and see your friends, meet your teacher, purchase your planner, deposit lunch money, and drop off your school supplies! We are excited to see you! You should have received a mailer with classroom assignments. Please note that we have very full classrooms at this time and changes will not be made until after the first two weeks of school. The very best way to support your child is to have a positive, encouraging attitude that communicates your confidence in them to tackle yet another year at Prune Hill with success!

It’s going to be a great year!
