Renegades Read Project

Using a grant awarded to our school last year by Camas Education Foundation, we will begin an all-school reading project after Spring Break. The novel chosen by staff is the 2007 National Book Award winner The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie.

Due to some sensitive subject matter, students will be required to return a signed permission form before being issued a copy of the novel. Parents are welcome to check out a copy of the book from us to preview in mid-March. Please see Amy Holmes or Stephanie Spencer at the school for more information.

The staff at Hayes Freedom High School have chosen this title because of Mr. Alexie’s ability to capture the voice of an adolescent facing questions about his identity and his place in society, which we believe are relevant themes to our students.

We hope you will join us in reading & discussing this novel throughout the month of April.

Students of the Month

Be Kind~Be Proud~Be Fearless

Each month, teachers will choose one girl & one boy to be recognized as Students of the Month. These Renegades represent the qualities we look for every day - kindness, pride, fearlessness - in an outstanding manner, throughout their classes. These students are individuals who are consistently striving to do their best despite any obstacles and, in the process, inspiring others.

We celebrate our Renegade Students of the Month with a display in our Commons. Please stop by to read the remarks of nominating teachers and to find out what being a Renegade means to these students.
