Grass Valley was represented by Victoria Alberty, Faith Witarsa, Esther Doyle, Audrey Miller, Julianna Martinez, Miya Armstrong and Megan Jones who performed  in the LCRMEA (Lower Columbia River Music Educators Association) Elementary Honor Choir last Saturday, along with 120 other students in our league. They rehearsed with guest director Darcy Morrissey from Bothell.  Not only did they perform wonderfully, they represented Grass Valley at the highest level with their preparation, attitude and behavior on and off the stage.

Grass Valley Students have the amazing opportunity to spend time with children’s advocate and award-winning author Trudy Ludwig. Trudy has been featured on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” PBS’s nationally syndicated show “Keeping Kids Healthy,” the Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, Reading Rainbow and the National Crime Prevention Council’s Circle of Respect program. She has served as an expert panel member on Sesame Workshop’s video series addressing bullying. Parents are welcome to attend one of the two assemblies.

We are proud to share that Natalie J. Wilson, K-5 Music and Vocal Jazz teacher and GV Vocal Jazz leader, has received an incredible and very well-deserved honor: the Tenuto award from the DeMiero Jazz Fest, an active and influential group in the jazz world.

The award was doled out earlier this month, National Music in Our Schools Month – perfect timing!

In the musical world, the term Tenuto means a note or chord held for its full time value or slightly more. This award was presented to Natalie as an acknowledgement of her extensive efforts and contributions to the world of jazz music and in supporting students in their development and love of music.

Natalie has many ties and fond connections to Frank DeMiero, founder and director of the Jazz Fest Team. She shared, “Frank has been a mentor of mine since I attended his very first summer jazz camp in high school. He is my publisher, friend and still my mentor. He is the reason I do jazz.”

“Natalie’s contributions here at Grass Valley are so appreciated,” shared Principal Sean McMillan. Just this past week, she invited and hosted the choir from East Anchorage High, the most diverse high school in the nation. “What a great opportunity for our kids. There was a lot of excitement around the visit and learning all around. Natalie, we are SO PROUD of you and thankful to serve alongside you!”

Families of students currently in grades 2–6 can refer their students to receive Highly Capable Program services through December 15.
